Celebrating retail history

Marshall Field’s celebrated history in Chicago and the mid-west was tapped in creating their first branch outside the Chicago area. Located in Columbus Ohio, this store interpreted the classic architecture of the Chicago flagship store to great reviews.

This success led to the design of the Field’s State Street location, at the time, the US’s largest retail renovation to date. Planned as a 5-year, 1 million sq. ft., $115 million renovation of the 5 historic buildings comprising the Field’s flagship store, challenges included floor level changes, historic listed architecture, and removal of many obsolete services. Accomplishments included the restoration of protected architecture, including a large Tiffany Glass ceiling, and the creation of a central escalator well where an air shaft and loading dock existed previously. An early and under-budget completion of the State Street project led to additional Marshall Field’s projects.
